2022 Teacher of the Year - Jill McCormick

Hi my name is Jill McCormick and I am a counselor at The Ram Academy and I've been in the Owasso district. This is my 15th year. I have at some point taught at every level of aged kid. I've taught preschool elementary middle school and then I was the counselor middle school and high school and I've also taught adult ESL. So I've taught every level at some point. My favorite thing about being a counselor is just talking to kids and helping them navigate decisions figuring out issues where they want to go next what the next steps are just helping them figure it out. That's my favorite part of counseling. I have been helping Mrs. Petty with some of her classes. So it's fun to try and be back in the classroom every once in a while. We've done a girls group before where we kind of tag team a little bit and if there's like a specific issue that it's going be a little touchy or emotional she'll have me come in sometimes to help her navigate that and then this semester we're doing a Psychology class so I've been coming in and teaching things on personality Enneagram type things and that's been fun cuz I have my endorsement to teach psychology and I've never really got teach it. So it's been fun to be in there and do that. I think the most important part of counseling is being a good communicator and a good listener or good hearer so that you're really hearing what they're saying not just what verbally they're saying but what they're really saying and being able to communicate with them and pull things out of them when they're not able to do it themselves. It's a friendship and the relationships I've built in in this District and in this community has been the most vital thing. Owasso is a great town great people and I'm very supportive of each and I've made some of my best friends here. So that's been very important to me and vital at being in Owasso.
